Take Back The Living Room: A Holiday Music Rx From Production For Use.

Happy Holidays Everyone. Just in the nick of time this year’s PFU holiday mixes are ready. I have been one out and about in the seasonal atmosphere and have been hearing Christmas music constantly, naturally. What I’ve been shocked to discover is that I really hate most of it. I would say that 80 – 90% of the common radio play holiday music makes me angry. This is particularly ironic since that’s the opposite of its supposed goal and since I own so much holiday music from all sorts of varying styles and time periods. A lot of it is by artists that generally everybody knows…but I never hear much of it. Therefore if my mixes (or at least one of them) are kind of dark this year, my frustration with “popular” holiday music should explain why.

I’m doing something different this year that will hopefully make the mixes a bit handier to everyone. There are 2 versions. One is the actual holiday mix that seemed to make sense this year (PFU #10), but it has quite a few songs that might make it unusable, say, at your grandmother’s house. I’m partial to the first because it has songs that fit many different emotional states, which is generally many people’s condition around the holidays.

But, since not everyone likes to accessorize all emotions (or can’t) there is a second alternate/supplement mix (PFU #011) is that has a far more accessible track list. That way if you only want good, clean holiday songs then you have that option, and if you like both then mixes then you can use the “clean version” when hanging around the family, etc. It’s designed to be an alternative to what other sort of dreadful crap that may be lurking on Christmas radio or dusty parental CD cabinets during your holiday. I hope that everyone gets some enjoyment out of them in one way or another. Enjoy your holidays.

Sadgasm. The Heartbreak Anthology: Part 3

sad

Good Evening. Let’s Get Sad. To that place where someone leaves you and advice and logic are useless. The mind usually leaps into a mode to fix its own imbalance as quickly as possible. This, of course, is usually the worst sort of reaction because heartbreak isn’t commonly a quick fix. Even if there is hope for a relationship most often there is a sizeable amount of arduous time apart required to recalibrate yourself and then properly recognize, accept, and mend the toxic elements that brought everything down. That’s if you’re lucky.

This mix is for men, and a woman’s mix will be following shortly. However, I think they all the sadness mixes will work for both sexes, much more than the anger mixes. Sadness usually makes us be a bit more accepting of another point of view because, well, we want everything to be ok.

I think that the brain has a hard time suddenly losing what it had come to assume was an essential element, no matter the amount of clues beforehand. The natural human reaction to say or do anything to solve a long view problem overnight (like a rotten relationship) eventually reminds us all that we, despite our quasi-sophistication, cannot escape becoming very irrational and dishonest with ourselves at our core.  This is a generalization, but seeing how most cultures defend this behavior in art, music, etc. as an inescapable defining human characteristic, I’d say its close enough to declare embedded in us. I don’t think we can evolve out of it. So…here’s what we get back for all of that intractable self destruction and pain.

Some of these songs are by the people who “cause” this sadness and the rest were written by really, really desperate and devastated people at their most irrational and broken. They’re so fucking good.
